Gosh I love belting this song out whenever I can!
The above video was filmed last week here in Nottingham, right in the very centre of the city in a beautiful old shopping arcade at the back of the Council House (aka. cesspit of doom).
You can just see a lovely old painting of Robin Hood there if you look closely. Gone is the England of Olde, alas.
It’s quite an odd song really - there is a lot in there that leads one to believe that it’s a mystical, magical song. Some say it derives from a mummers play. Too much to go into now. Of course, Nottamun has to be a corruption of Nottingham. All the best things come from here of course!
I came across the following video which I thought may explain things a bit better but it’s all very American though and a bit self-absorbed (no offense to our cousins over the water) - ZERO mention of it’s roots in ENGLAND and NOTTINGHAM, thank you very much!!
Well anyway, there is actually another version from the US that is not too bad. Has much more soul to it:
We are nearly done with these daily songs now. Please give me a listen on all the usual streaming platforms. Thanks!
And it’s available to buy here.
