Blackthorn's out

4th April

Life has a funny way of repeating itself, year upon year. Just like Mother Nature does. I noticed the blackthorn (in fact THIS very blackthorn) out along the railway line earlier as I passed my old village on the train.

Then I remembered this video! It is an old one, as LuLu is there, with his characteristic whimper. I had it ready to post when the time was right having come across it when searching through old snowy videos!

I had this mad idea of making a series of educational wild flower/tree/plant videos. I did it for a while during lockdown but nothing beats real life does it? Anyway it’s an option on my Patreon if you fancy it. I’ve collected soooo many such videos over the years.

I might just scrap all that actually and just upload them all to my paid Substack instead. Feel like I am managing WAY too many platforms at the moment!

I love Substack - it covers everything in one. I am not so bothered about the “social media” style features (the feed on the app and the notes thingy and going live etc.) I just want to write and share my music. But a bit of wild food and wild flowers I don’t think would go amiss…

Wild flowers were always my thing and I joined the Wild Flower Society ages ago and we’d do these plant walks and wild flower surveys in hidden meadows up Derbyshire.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the blackthorn if you have any blooming near to you. What I was going to say was that this video was from 3 April 2021. I am writing this on 4th April - nearly 4 years exactly to the day. Always happens. Its like an instinctive search for the WILD.

It is like a feeling when you just KNOW what plants are out. Without calendars and clocks where would we be? Well, I am sure we would be absolutely fine actually. I can always sense when the wild garlic is out and the hawthorn is in leaf without even seeing them.

But of course going out in Nature re-sets our inner clocks that connect us to ancestral knowledge.

If you haven’t been for a walk in Nature lately - make sure you do!! This is one of the best times here in England and the weather has been AMAZING!

I made time to go out with the dog this morning even though I felt so rushed and stressed with far too many other things to do. It was wonderful though.

Hawthorn, Horse Chestnut and Wood Anemones (Windflowers)

The wood anemones were in full bloom and the dogs mercury out everywhere. Bluebells next!

Have a lovely week folks!
